Bunion surgery techniques

There are several new and revolutionary modifications of established operations that surgeons use to treat common foot conditions such as bunions.

Treatment of bunions can also be conservative.

Osteotomies, a type of minimally invasive surgery, can be performed to remove bony prominences through minute incisions under X-ray control.  This can be helpful for bunion deformity (hallux valgus), osteotomy of the heel bone and cheilectomy of hallux rigidus.

Keyhole bunion treatment is also considered a minimally invasive bunion correction method although it depends on the size of the bunion.

Bunion surgery recovery

Typically, after minimally invasive bunion surgery, patients spend 2-3 weeks wearing a post op shoe. Once the sutures are removed, you wear an sports shoe or air cast boot for 2-3 more weeks and transition to normal weight bearing.

Treatment of bunions can also be conservative, using orthoses (braces or insoles) and painkillers whilst physiotherapy can assist with related muscle imbalances.
